To generate lighting ideas for the cinematography of an upcoming film project that I am set to shoot called ‘The Girl and the Mask,’ I decided to build an environment that suited the script and early concept artwork. The brutalist design is inspired by the Roger-Stevens lecture theatre on the campus of my old University, the University of Leeds and the background buildings take a heavy influence of the designs… Read the rest
In an effort to learn the lighting tools and rendering pipeline for Unreal Engine 4, I took it upon myself to re-light some of the fantastic free example projects made by Epic Games that are available for all UE4 subscribers to download and experiment with.
My intention was not to mess around too much with the environments themselves but rather to light them from scratch in a style that suits… Read the rest

An interior scene based upon various reference images that I have been collecting over the last few weeks. The building/architecture was created especially for this scene, as where all of the models (excluding the book collection, which I had made previously). Rather than hdri lighting, I decided to use a V-Ray physical sun and sky, plus a couple of area lights for fill. This allowed me to light the scene… Read the rest
A new interior scene, this time with a bit of a vintage feel created mainly by the addition of the Cluedo board game. Modelling the cluedo box was perhaps the bigest challenge as I decided to model the folds in the cardboard accurately, rather than relying solely on a bump map, which would have yielded a lower quality result. The rest of the scene was fairly straightforward and was mostly… Read the rest
The fireplace is victorian, made of Cast Iron and is surrounded by a carrara marble hearth. My original intention was to make a simple model for a floor-plan render, however, I got carried away and went into more detail than was needed for it’s original purpose, so I decided it deserved a render of it’s own. The books either side are the book collection that I also made to… Read the rest
The first render in what will become a small series loosely based upon the derelict fun fair in the town of Pripyat, which was abandoned as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. The modeling was all pretty straight forward, so I concentrated most of my effort on painting detailed textures as I wanted to create a real sense of age and decay. The sky was created… Read the rest
A collection of books that I made for populating the shelves of my interior renders. It’s was pretty painstaking work scanning the covers of a good proportion of my books, tidying up the images and then cropping and positioning them to fit the models UV’s. The modelling was pretty straight forward once I had the various dimensions for the different sized books (and there were many!). Managing the scene… Read the rest
The Aces Motel is a filming location in California that has been used in many films, including a film for which I was the cinematographer, titled ‘The Thompsons’.
When I came on-board the project the small part of the film that was set in the United States had already been shot, so I never got to go there. So in compensation for that I decided to recreate the place in… Read the rest
